Jobs at the Catalina Environmental Leadership Program are for people who have proven leadership experience, a formal science or education background, proven community building skills and a love for the rustic and outdoor lifestyle of an environmental education instructor.

There are many advantages to working at CELP

Catalina Island is an awesome environment. The ocean is incredibly full of life and we see amazing things every time we snorkel or kayak or walk along it. Living with the land through the changes of theyear opens ones eyes to the incredible lessons that nature offers.

You have the opportunity to be trained by naturalists of The Ocean Futures Society, an organization headed by Jean-Michel Cousteau.

The students who come to see us are eager to learn and even after a few short days, they impact your commitment to life and learning.

The job is a remarkable experience in learning about the environment, working with children and being part of a special and unique community. Instructors often comment about how incredible their experience is working in the program.

Yet, the realities of any job are important to share.

We are remote

The island is remote from the mainland and we are remote on the island. Camp is 6 miles of single lane dirt road from Two Harbors, a yachting community with a small store, a snack bar and restaurant and a bar. You don't have a car. It's a two-hour hike or a 30-minute bike ride. We use radiophones because there aren't phone lines. Cell service is sporadic. We only have two phone lines. They are business lines first. You cannot receive incoming phone calls. CELP does have a voice mail pager number you can give to family. You may have to wait in line to use the phone. We have a satellite internet connection. It works most of the time. Staff share one computer. It works most of the time. You may have to wait in line to use the computer.

Other things you can expect that you might overlook:

-We work long hours with a close knit group of peers

-We live in simple rustic cabins with up to 5 other CELP staff

-We walk to the shower, toilet and dining area.

-The showers are pull chain operated at a pre-mixed warm temperature

-We eat outdoors.

-There's no regular access to "city life" - shopping, entertainment and other comforts.

-You are scheduled to work some weekends with groups that require lifeguards and climbing instructors.

-You have to pay $60 to take the boat to get to Los Angeles.

-If you bring a car to Los Angeles it costs $55 a month to park at the boat terminal.

-You can't drink alcohol at camp.
