Our site is located at Howlands Landing on the California
side of Santa
Catalina Island, 22 miles from the port of Los Angeles.
Several hundred feet of beach and a private pier provide
access to the kelp beds in the cove. This secluded spot allows
for ample exploration of the island's unique and unspoiled
plant and animal life. Hiking trails lead in several directions
to give students opportunities to explore the rich diversity
of Catalina. At camp, we have two labs, a dive deck, high
ropes course and climbing wall, and a composting area and
a camp garden, as well as lots of open space. All together
it makes for an ideal spot to achieve the goals of our Catalina
Environmental Leadership Program

The camp facility is rustic and simple. We keep it clean,
in good repair and safe. We eat outdoors and sleep in open
air cabins. There are 6 bunkbeds, a single electrical outlet
and an overhead light in each cabin. Bathrooms and showers
are nearby. Some showers are gym style. There is no public
phone, however arrangements can be made for contact with
your school.
Hot entrees, vegetarian options and either a fruit and cereal
bar
(breakfast) or salad bar (lunch and dinner) are available
at each meal.
Dessert is served with dinner. Food is served buffet style.
Groups take a sack lunch with them on the boat the day of
departure. If you have
specific needs for meals please discuss those when you book
your group. The camp store is scheduled for students and
chaperones to buy souvenirs, sodas and snacks. We limit
students to one snack and one soda at a time.

The weather is usually 5-10 degrees cooler than downtown
LA temperatures. Depending on the time of year, it can be
rainy, hot, cold, windy, dry, dusty or absolutely gorgeous.
Water temperature ranges from the upper 50s in winter and
early spring to upper 60s and low 70s in September. CELP
programs are outdoor programs and we follow the activities
unless the weather or water conditions are unsafe.
We provide all the needed equipment for all CELP activities,
including 7mm wetsuits, lifejackets, kayaks, paddles, climbing
equipment and other supplies. Students and chaperones receive
a detailed packing list prior to the trip. In addition to
clothing and toiletries, a sleeping bag, sturdy shoes for
hiking,a water bottle, a swimsuit and towel, a warm jacket
and a flashlight are typical items everyone will need.
